Intro:
This is a true story of a youth who became a Soldier. It was the foundation of an opinion article that was published by the Stars and Stripes in 2009. Ten years earlier all he had to drive was his parents’ car. One day he picked up a couple of students walking on their way to school.” (harmonica intro)
Lyrics:
My age is eighteen. I live with my parents
I drive their car when I get the chance
I live in a country where I can by a gun
But not a car because I can’t afford one
Driving around with my friends is fun
I drive all week and on the weekend
I drive to church and I drive to school
I give people a ride it makes me feel cool
Two students carried bags along the roadside
I stopped and asked if they wanted a ride
I asked if they’re Thespians wearing coats of black
One said, “Don’t talk to him Dylan.” They just
sat in the back
I drove them to high school, said “Have a nice day”
They ignored me as they went on their way
I continued on my way to community college
I forgot about them on my quest for knowledge
That day ended early, we were sent home
Bomb threats and a shooting, where the two students roamed
Instead of the lessons of a degree plan
We were schooled in guns, the law of the land
Maybe we have become desensitized
Ask and listen to the nation’s cries
Remember what it means, what it means to care
Escort your vote to safety, the majority’s there
